CLINICAL

In Canada, there is currently a gap for comprehensive treatment of younger children, specifically those aged 12 and under, who are suffering from mental health issues that are mild to moderate. KIDTHINK provides a model of care that includes psychologists, psychiatrists, and other professionals (i.e. social workers, occupational therapist, behaviour specialist) and skill sets (i.e. nutritionists) creating a truly multidisciplinary team who all work together to give the children and their families the highest standard of care.

As a start-up clinical organization, KIDTHINK offers assessment and treatment of a variety of mental illnesses, mental disorders and behavioural issues which include but are not limited to the following:

  • Anxiety

  • Depression

  • Behaviour/ADHD

  • Learning Difficulties/Disabilities

KIDTHINK provides evidenced-based mental health and addictions clinical services and treatments modeled after the services provided by Child Mind Institute in New York. Child Mind employs leading child and adolescent psychiatrists who offer best-in-class evidenced-based clinical care. KIDTHINK has adapted the services provided by Child Mind to fit within a Canadian and Manitoba model.

MENTAL HEALTH NEEDS ASSESSMENT

Our clinicians facilitate comprehensive mental health needs assessments to guide the development of evidence-based care plans.  These assessments may identify a need for further clinical investigations such as psychological and/or psychiatric diagnostic assessments.

EMPOWERING CHILDREN

Evidence-based interventions are provided and tailored to the unique strengths and needs of children and their families to help reduce symptoms, enhance coping capacities, and improve functioning and quality of life. Treatment focuses on helping children work towards meeting developmental milestones so they can thrive in their home, school, and community environments.

Mental Health Clinicians can help by offering:

  • Comprehensive mental health needs assessments

  • Evidence-based care planning

  • Individual therapy for children, including parent involvement

  • Group therapy

EQUIPPING PARENTS

KIDTHINK collaborates with parents to identify ways of understanding and meeting the needs of their children.  Parents are actively involved in their children’s treatment processes to facilitate changes to their family environments. When parents make these changes, it supports improved functioning for their children who are learning new ways of coping.  Parent-focused interventions aim to empower and equip parents with the tools and knowledge to support their child's recovery.

Mental Health Clinicians can help by offering:

  • Psychoeducation

  • Parent treatment to improve parent well-being and coping

  • Parent management skills training, skill development and skill enhancement

  • Parent workshops and groups

STRENGTHENING FAMILIES

KIDTHINK supports the entire family system surrounding the child.  Children struggling with mental health concerns and/or mental illness are both impacted by, and, in turn, impact their family environments.  When the entire family, including siblings, participates in the treatment process, family relationships, communication, and interaction patterns can be strengthened. This leads to improved family functioning and well-being for all.

Mental Health Clinicians can help by offering:

  • Family therapy

  • Support to siblings

OUR CLINICAL SERVICES

STRENGTH-BASED APPROACH

KIDTHINK has developed programs and services which acknowledge that every child has a unique set of strengths and abilities they can rely on to overcome mental health challenges.

About the strength-based approach:

  • Individualized strength-based approach can identify and enhance the strengths of the child.

  • Acknowledges the child’s unique set of strengths and challenges.

  • Engages the child and the parent as partners in developing and implementing the individualized treatment and care plan.

  • Moves the focus away from deficits of children with mental illnesses but focuses on the strengths and resources of the child and family.

TRAUMA-INFORMED APPROACH

KIDTHINK understands that there are many forms of violence and trauma among children, whether it is developmental, historical, simple or complex or gender-based, and that there is a wide range of adaptations which children make to cope. A trauma-informed approach is about:

  • Creating safety and trustworthiness through the course of mental health care interactions.

  • Making interactions, services and programs receptive to and supportive of children who have been overwhelmed, fearful, have difficulty trusting and/or have difficulty self-regulating.

KIDTHINK has created programs and services where:

  • All staff are informed about trauma

  • All staff work from the core principles of trauma awareness to the building of strength and skills

  • The child’s and family’s trauma, related health, relational concerns, trauma adaptations are identified, and supports and strategies that increase safety and support connection are offered

  • Focus is on stabilization, safety, and understanding the impact of trauma on current functioning

MENTAL HEALTH AND ADDICTIONS

KIDTHINK understands the connection between mental health challenges and addiction. By practicing early intervention, KIDTHINK aims to decrease the likelihood of these children developing an addiction later in life.

Referral

KIDTHINK's goal is to help Manitoba’s and, in due time, Canada’s children thrive and reach their potential. Children, families, and mental health services providers experience diverse and growing challenges. KIDTHINK is making an investment that contributes to the positive and sustained outcomes for children.
