Understanding OCD in Children

The purpose of  this series is to help caregivers better understand OCD in children. We will not only describe what OCD is, but we will look at how OCD presents in children, what treatment can look like for OCD, and some strategies for you to take home to support a child with OCD.

Completing all 6 parts will grant the participant a certificate of completion. Please note that ConnectCare does not provide continued education credits for mental health professionals.

Lessons

Part 1 - What is OCD?

Length: 7 minutes

In this module, we will learn about the concept of self-regulation, which involves managing thoughts, feelings, and behaviors to achieve tasks and goals efficiently. We will explore its complexity, encompassing emotional regulation and processing sensory information, and understand its development from co-regulation in childhood to independent regulation, emphasizing its importance in academic success, relationships, and overall well-being.

Part 2 – Dimensions of OCD

Length: 10 minutes

In this lesson, we will cover the physiological and psychological aspects of self-regulation in children, exploring the developmental stages of their brains. We will delve into the concepts of the "upstairs" and "downstairs" brain, examining how these areas influence children's emotional responses and behavior.

Part 3 – Prevalence of OCD

Length: 6 minutes

In this module, we will explore the crucial role caregivers play in emotional regulation and present strategies for self-calming. We'll delve into how our own emotional capacity directly influences our ability to assist children in managing their emotions and discuss practical techniques such as deep breathing and progressive muscle relaxation to maintain calm in challenging situations.

Part 4 – Cycle of OCD

Length: 10 minutes

In this lesson, we will cover the importance of caregivers' emotional regulation in helping children manage their own emotions, including strategies for self-calming like deep breathing and progressive muscle relaxation. We will explore how our responses as parents and caregivers can be affected by our emotional state and how techniques derived from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy can aid in managing our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Additionally, we will examine how our automatic thoughts in challenging situations can influence our overall well-being and interactions with children.

Part 5 – Treatment for OCD

Length: 12 minutes

In this lesson, we will cover the strategies to enhance a child's emotional regulation, focusing on recognizing early signs of distress and developing proactive plans for challenging situations. We will delve into a five-step problem-solving model designed to equip children with the skills to handle emotions thoughtfully, emphasizing the need for creative thinking and critical evaluation of possible solutions. Lastly, we'll review essential do's and don'ts in nurturing emotional regulation, reinforcing the importance of caregivers' self-regulation and setting realistic expectations for the developmental process.

Part 6 - Strategies for Caregivers
