What is rapid screening?

KIDTHINK aims to respond immediately to referrals. We want to ensure that families get a direct response within two business days. We offer families the option of completing the referral, screening, and intake process during their first contact.

The entire process generally takes between 30 to 45 minutes. Please review question above to identify the information you will need to provide.

What is the referral process?

If you are interested in receiving services by a clinician at KIDTHINK, your first step is to contact info@kidthink.ca or call KIDTHINK’s main line at 431.388.5373 and request an appointment.

You will then speak with an intake coordinator who will complete the referral form with you. The intake coordinator will then complete or schedule a second call to complete a screening interview. This should take about 20 minutes to complete.

After your information has been reviewed, you will be assigned a clinician who will contact you to schedule your initial appointment

How do I contact KIDTHINK for referral or more information?

Please contact us by e-mail at info@kidthink.ca or by phone at 431.388.5373 to discuss the programs and services we offer, which include individualized treatment and school and community consultation. Our clinicians will develop an individualized treatment plan to address your child’s individual needs.

Where benefits/insurance is available, can it be used?

Yes. If you have Extended Health Care benefits, you may be eligible for reimbursement of some or all your costs. It is your responsibility to find out from your insurance provider whether you and your family have mental health care coverage and the details of this coverage.

Is there a cost associated with KIDTHINK services?

Yes, for most families. KIDTHINK is a non-profit, fee-for-service organization with a sliding-fee scale based on income and number of dependents.

Due to the generous contributions of private donors and granting organizations, we have been able to establish the Client Care Subsidy Program. Families who experience multiple barriers to accessing mental health care may qualify to receive a course of treatment at no or minimal cost.

Do you treat youths older than twelve?

Yes. On a case-by-case basis. While KIDTHINK's focus is providing early intervention and prevention services to children 12 and under, we are committed to being part of the solution to ensuring timely access to children's mental health treatment services in Manitoba. If a child older than 12 years has been unable to access timely services elsewhere, KIDTHINK will assess, on a case-by-case basis, whether we are able to provide appropriate services to the child and family.

Do you take referrals outside of Winnipeg?

Yes. We welcome children and families from across Manitoba.

Are parents/caregivers included in a child’s treatment?

Yes. We encourage families to be involved in a child’s treatment. We include caregivers in every stage of a child’s treatment. Both our Clinical and Outreach services offer psychoeducation, parent training, and parent coaching.
There may come a point when it is important for the parents/caregivers to receive services from KIDTHINK to develop or enhance the skills necessary to support the child.

Who can make a referral?

Parents, school personnel, doctors, and other clinicians can make a referral to KIDTHINK. Once a referral is made our intake coordinator will follow-up to set up a time to complete an initial assessment with the family. We ask that if you are not the legal guardian that you have a conversation with the legal guardian prior to making the referral. Our team will ensure that all consents are in place prior to starting services.

Does my child need a diagnosis to receive services?

No. We offer services to children with or without a diagnosis. KIDTHINK works collaboratively with parents and their child’s team to identify ways of understanding and meeting the child’s needs. Together, we develop programs and services which acknowledge that every child has a unique set of strengths and abilities.
